" The prime function of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is to provide spinning reserve in the event of power plant or transmission line equipment failure. For these systems rechargeable batteries are used to store electricity in the form of chemical energy. ABB so far has two different kinds of BESS equipped with the corresponding converter. A key component of any energy storage or distributed generation system is its Power Conversion System (PCS). The PCS provides the interface between AC grid supply voltage and the variable operating voltage of the DC modules. The converter design itself is independent from the used batteries, because in all cases DC battery voltage has to be converted into AC grid voltage."
