| Description: | This web-based learning tool teaches the user concepts about building bridges. This learning tool is an excellent supplement to civil engineering students. The Cooper River Bridge, designed by Howard Needles Tammen and Bergendoff (HNTB), is a major structure (opened 1992) in the I-526 Mark Clark Expressway in Charleston, South Carolina (see maps below). More than a record span for the state (a main span of 800 feet and side spans of 400 feet), the bridge is emblematic of a new generation of truss bridges; trusses which are more aesthetically appealing and at the same time incorporate technologies which make maintenance easier and extend the bridge life. The learning tool is divided into the following topics: - Introduction - Fact Sheet - Information for Instructors - Typical Homework Assignments - Design Specifications - Site Conditions - Conceptual Design Alternatives - 1 Parallel Chord Continuous Truss - Tied Arch - Variable Depth Continuous Truss - Preliminary Design Conclusions and Recommendations - Final Design - Construction Methods - Substructure - Superstructure - Closure - Credits and Acknowledgements - References - AutoCAD Drawings - Images (in JPEG Format) |
