| Description: | Online manuscript by forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland. Excerpts: "On December 6, 1989, classes were in session at the École Polytechnique at the University of Montreal, located on the north slope of Mont Royal. It was the largest engineering school in Canada, with about 5,000 students enrolled at that time. A six-story yellow brick building housed the classrooms and offices. ...The authorities soon learned that the suicidal gunman was Marc Lépine. It would take a while to piece together why he had caused so much slaughter, but he had stated enough about his intent for students to tell reporters that his rampage had been anti-feminist. He had wanted to shoot only women. Concern that Lépine had acted with an accomplice, the police searched the entire building until they were satisfied that the bloody rampage was indeed over and that the place was secure. In all, Lépine had killed 14 women and wounded 13 other students of both genders. Yet there were more victims as well. All of the families would bear their own scars from the 20-minute siege... While people struggled to make sense of Lépine's rage and his delusion that women might actually respond as he desired, there was plenty of anger. Domestic abuse centers offered statements to the effect that such violence represented the controlling attitudes of many men who were threatened by the accomplishments of women. Even when they did not kill as Lépine had done, they abused them to try to retain control. Many people blamed society's collusion with and support of those attitudes."
