Website of educational programs in sustainable, ecological, and regenerative design.
" The mission of the Ecosa Institute is to restore health to the natural environment, and thus the human environment, through education in design. Our vision is based on synthesizing the ethical and ecological values critical to the health of the environment, with the vitality and dynamism of the design arts.
The Ecosa Institute was founded in the belief that design based on nature is critical to the search for a new design philosophy. It is certainly critical to the future survival of our species, and is indispensable to creating a sustainable future. The design of human environments has always had a pervasive impact on human societies and the natural systems in which we are participants. We take the view that design is a transformative profession; that the environments we create change the way our society perceives the world.
There are many historical precedents for this position, including many documented examples both positive and negative. While this is a radical view, we believe that a powerful new design philosophy is essential as we face the challenges of the new millennium. By using a naturocentric ethic as the model for an integrated, complex, interactive approach to design, we are adding a unique perspective to the environmental debate."

News article about Nokia's new "pop apart" cell phone for easy disassembly.
"Nokia has prototyped a cell phone that pops itself apart in two seconds, as opposed to the two minutes normally required for manual disassembly. Their diagram shows how they use shape memory alloy springs to push apart the snap-together plastic case and pop the circuit board off, use shape memory polymer screws which lose their threading, and use shape memory polymer screw bosses which expand to release the now unthreaded screws."

South Florida Restoration Science Forum (SFRSF) site discusses how scientific studies enable land managers to ensure the preservation and sustainability of wetlands and wildlife, such as restoration of tree islands; researching the links between water, aquatic animals, and birds to evaluate restoration needs; alligators and crocodiles as indicators of ecologic health and condition; and using computer models to aid the Florida panther. There are links provided for additional resources. Questions at time of cataloging include:
* What is happening to the grass in "The River of Grass?"
* Why are tree islands important and how do we restore them?
* How will research on fishes and wading birds help to guide and evaluate system restoration?
* How is restoration improved by research on alligators and crocodiles?
* How can we use computer models to aid the Florida Panther?
From their website: "The South Florida Restoration Science Forum website highlights the powerful connection between science and management decisions in restoration efforts. You can see first-hand how the public's investment in science is paying off in support of better management decisions and restoration of imperiled south Florida Ecosystems - including the internationally recognized, globally significant Everglades. The Forum affords a unique opportunity for everyone to see highlights of the most significant restoration science and management efforts underway. Hundreds of scientists from numerous organizations have prepared over five hundred posters and exhibits to show you the strength of the science that is done to have science-based decisions in managing the restoration effort. The forum is being held by the Working Group of the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force whoses member organizations are responsible for the multi billion dollar restoration projects in south Florida."
