The lever arms can be read off from the coloured rectangles; one rectangle corresponds to 0.10 m. The lever is in balance, when the applet is started. In this case the measured force which is equal to the difference of weight and buoyant force is reduced. You can change (within certain limits) the preselected values of base area, height and densities by using the appropriate text fields. This web-based software enables the user to perform temperature-pressure experiments on a selected substance in order to determine the conditions under which particular phases of that substance are stable. The user can begin by double-clicking the name of the substance you want to test from the list in the upper-right hand corner. The user can use the blue arrows with the mouse or the arrows on your keyboard to navigate through the temperature-pressure space shown on the screen. Sixty-five 10- and 11-year-old children in England were given a male-stereotyped and a female stereotyped version of software (pirates and princesses, both adventure games, which were structually identical except for the sex of the good and evil characters, either all male or all female). Their performance was correlated with home computer use, school computer use, and the use of a computer mouse. Kids completed questionnaires a week before using the software. They did both pieces of software 20 minutes apart, then a final questionnaire. Boys performed better in both games than girls and better regardless of which was done first or second. Girls preferred the Princesses version slightly more; there was no difference for the boys, but preference for the Princesses for girls correlated positively with higher performance on it (not true for boys). Although boys had more experience and experience correlated positively with performance, the gap remained even when experience was removed. And obviously changing the gender of the characters didn't make a difference. The intrinsic interest of the software is an important factor in girls' (but not boys') computer involvement.   less
