The authors are concerned with educational computer games on math that interest girls. Much "girl" software "appeals to stereotypically female interests: shopping, makeup, fashion, dating." (p. 1) Using the Logical Journal of the Zoombonis (developed at TERC, published by Broderbund), they noted that 3rd to 5th grade girls were as enthusiastic about it as boys because of greater character dimensionality, the puzzle nature of the game, and opportunities for communication the game affords.   less

Digital Works is a FREE digital circuit simulator for Microsoft Windows. Its graphical design environment enables the user to construct digital logic circuits and analyze their behavior. Circuits can be composed of simple gates (AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR, NOT) and simple flip-flops (D, RS and JK). The user can use tri-state logic to construct systems with buses. Digital Works also provides mechanisms for detecting race conditions and bus contention. One of Digital Works most powerful features is its ability to create macros. This means that you can convert a circuit into a logic element itself. The new logic element can be used as a building block in the construction of more complex circuits. The complex circuit can also be converted into a new logic element, and so on. This enables the user to create a hierarchy of digital objects, with each new level hiding the complexity of its implementation. For example, the user could design a simple 4 bit binary counter and embed two of these into another circuit to create an 8 bit counter. Other examples of macros include: counters; shift registers; data registers.   less

We carry out original research on how people learn through science, art, story, and experience -- educational ways new to Western culture but traditional to Native peoples -- and carry out additional research on how such methods of learning can be applied effectively to public education venues. As it presently exists, DLISR is a prototype for culturally-competent cross-cultural digital library collections. It is intended for users of all cultures, but should be a particularly important resource for teachers and students in Native Studies programs and in tribal schools and colleges. It fits with DLESEâ??s mission of providing a digital library of earth science materials that meets the needs of a diverse community of users."   less
