Girls are generally under-represented in secondary and tertiary level computing courses. Seeking reasons for these gender differences in enrollments, data were collected from open-ended interviews with three different samples of participants: (1) 34 male and 34 female students enrolled in the second or third year of a university computer science course; (2) 33 secondary school girls aged 13–17 years, drawn from four different schools; and (3) 19 women working professionally in a computer-based career. Both the secondary and tertiary students held stereotyped views of computing and computer-related careers which differed markedly from the perceptions of the professional women. Important aspects of these careers were identified by the professional women. The question remains as to the numbers of students who make a poor career choice based on inaccurate perceptions of both computing and non-computing careers.   less

They mentioned role models, encouragement ("scaffolding"), collaborative assignments, reality-based assignments, and encouragement from father, male peers and male siblings. Recommended interventions include encouraging girls to ask questions and take risks and increasing play activities in technology environments.   less

Techbridge was a before- and after-school technology program for girls in 2000-2003 that was hosted at 11 elementary, middle, and high schools in the Bay Area. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 126 girls ages 12-15 and 34 parents/guardians. Even girls with positive experiences in the program did not aspire to technology careers. Reasons: negative stereotypyes about computing jobs (which remained as girls got older), disconnect between dreams and plans, little career info, lack of info about career preparation, and lack of career guidance and lack of targeted (as opposed to general) support from family. White parents were likelier to give vague support than parents of color, and higher SES parents were least likely to discuss careers. Families where someone had a technical career were more likely to provide guidance on technical careers.   less

Both sexes were overwhelmingly computer literate, but few females anticipated a career in IT. Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of gender differences on the career experiences and job success of information systems professionals. The study analyzes career experiences with respect to a number of variables, including feelings of acceptance, job discretion, met expectations, career support, career satisfaction, and organizational commitment. The study also examines which skills gained from educational preparation and work experience are viewed as most critical to successful performance. The study was accomplished by using in-depth interviews and a questionnaire. The findings showed that MIS careers offer challenge based upon technical competence, regardless of gender. The likelihood of reaching a technical plateau and the increasing transition of MIS roles into functional business units poses some career uncertainty.   less
