Course website with syllabus, readings, lecture notes and useful resources. The study of computer science in general, and in software engineering in particular, is primarily concerned with the current conditions of science and technology. But how do science and technology develop themselves? How does research in software engineering work? There is neither a simple answer to this question which might seem simple at first, nor is there a generally accepted answer to it at all. Possibly because computer science is still a young science, a clear separation into distinct fields of research with respective research methods has not emerged (yet). Nonetheless, several different approaches to software engineering can be identified: E.g., some scientists are concerned with the development of formal and semi-formal development methods, others are concerned with empirical software engineering. Different approaches correspond with understandings of software engineering as a branch or variant of mathematics, natural science, engineering, architecture, psychology and others. In this seminar, a selection of the manifold methods of software engineering research shall be discussed. This depends on more fundamental questions which should also be subject of the discussion: What kind of science is computer science or informatics? What is its subject? What is the role of software engineering within computer science? Is software engineering a branch of engineering? What is the relationship of computer science to other disciplines? The seminar is oriented towards graduate students (Diplom/Master) and doctoral students. Every student is assigned a coursework topic (we will try to satisfy individual preferences), on which he or she must write a paper and deliver a talk in an en-bloc event after the end of the lecture period of the summer term. Active participation in discussion of the talks of the other students is expected.   less
