| Description: | This website associated with and online microscopy site at Iowa State in Materials Science and Engineering has a variety of lessons authored or inspired by teachers. Applicable subject areas and grade level are shown in parenthesis. All lessons include a teacher instruction sheet and a student worksheet. We recommend that educators consider using the "Scavenger Hunt" lesson plan as an introduction to the SEM for their students. This allows the students to 'play' with the controls and gain familiarity with the technology. Subsequent lessons may go more smoothly once the students have gotten past the new-ness of the SEM. Most of the lesson plans have a site for both teachers and students. This is part of a larger website - WebSEM is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) connected to the Internet allowing educators from around the world to log-in and use the microscope live in their classroom. The students can control the magnification, move and focus the specimen, and collect elemental data to determine the composition of the specimen. When desired, images can be saved to the classroom computer for further viewing. This is a free service to all educators and available worldwide. |
