| Description: | Although there is no separate degree in Ocean Engineering at UC Berkeley, interested students should apply to the Mechanical Engineering Department where post-graduate degrees will be offered in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Ocean Engineering.\"Ocean Engineering is the field of study concerned with learning how the various components of the ocean work and how people can best apply technology to the ocean environment. Ocean Engineering deals with such issues as what humans can do to harness the resources of the ocean in a safe and environmentally responsible way. Ocean Engineering related jobs are found in the oil/gas industry, shipping/ship building industry, ocean research/exploration, environmental agencies, government, and many more. Ocean Engineering expertise is needed in a wide-range of coastal, river, and ocean related engineering projects or research. Ocean Engineering is actually a very broad discipline. Successful application of technology in the world?s oceans requires a wide knowledge base in such areas as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Oceanography, and many others. Topics of interest in Ocean Engineering include: Ø Ocean and coastal processes (physical, chemical, biological) Ø Fluid mechanics (computational, environmental) Ø Ocean structures (design, construction, operation, maintenance) Ø Ship structures / Ocean vehicles (design, construction, operation, maintenance) Ø Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) Ø Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) Ø Underwater life support Ø Ocean sensors and measurement Ø Ocean exploration Ø Resource extraction (oil, natural gas, minerals, food) Ø Management of marine technology Ø ?. and virtually any technology as it leads to a better understanding of, or better work on, in, under, and through the world?s oceans." |
