| Description: | "The author claims that problem- or task-focused multidisciplinary schools may offer the best method of addressing the complex and nonlinear problems of the future. The more we try to solve our problems, the more we find that at least part of the solution exists outside any one discipline. Spies gives the example of human cloning as a problem that clearly spans many branches of both science and the humanities." This posting is a review by David Mayocchi of The University in Transformation: Global Perspectives on the Futures of the University, by edited by Sohail Inayatullah and Jennifer Gidley. (ISBN: 0-89789-718-8 Bergin & Garvey, Westport, CT) It appeared in the June-August 2004 issues of Planning for Higher Education. 32(4): 47-48. |

Closing paragraphs "In her concluding chapter, Jennifer Gidley notes the strong emphasis by contributors on the types and structures of universities in the future. The scenarios include three broad categories: the corporatized or convenience megauniversity, the Ivy League or brand-name university, and the alternative or niche university. Gidley believes each type will include an Internet component. This book challenges readers to become active in imagining a future for the university. It reminds us that the future is not inevitable but rather is something we shape through the decisions we make. It is a book that questions some of our assumptions and is stimulating in its diversity. Planners will find it is a book that will help them to ask questions they possibly did not know they needed to ask and encourage them to be active in giving shape to the answers." |
