| Description: | The main objective of the study of the mechanics of materials is to provide the chemical engineer with the means of analyzing and designing various mechanics and load bearing structures. After completing this course, a student should be able to: 1. Solve axially loaded members for stresses and deflections in statically determinate or indeterminate cases. 2. Solve torsionally loaded shafts for stresses and deflections in statically determinate or indeterminate cases. 3. Solve beams under bending for stresses. 4. Solve transversely loaded beams for internal shear forces, bending moments and deflection. 5. Apply singularity functions to beam problems. 6. Solve for stresses in beams with combined axial and transverse loads. 7. Know the basics of mechanical design of process vessels that they use in the processing industry. 8. Use some of the available computer packages which solve strength of materials problems. The course website has a syllabus and lecture notes are provided on the following topics: 1 Tension, Compression, and Shear. 2 Axially Loaded Members and Compound Bars. 3 Shearing Force and Bending Moment Diagram. 4 Stresses Due to Bending. 5 Deflection of Beams. 6 Torsion of Shafts and Thin Tubes. 7 Thin Cylindrical and Spherical Vessels. 8 Thick Cylindrical Vessels. 9 Flat-bottomed Cylindrical Vessels. 10 Design of Cylindrical Vessels with Formed Closures. 11 Design of Tall Vertical Vessels. 12 Design of Pressure Vessels to Code Specification. |
