Despite the U.S. economic recession, the cellular industry signed on 1.3 million subscribers in the past six months, equating to 7,600 new subscribers every day. Industry analysts project cellular subscribers to reach between 20 million to 27 million by 1997. In less than a decade, cellular evolved from a luxury service to an important alternative to wired phone service. "In just nine years, faster than any other communications technology, we have created. from scratch an industry that serves 10 million people. We have extended the most advanced wireless technology yet developed from the big city to the countryside," said Thomas Wheeler, president and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association." |
