| Description: | "The Genomics Digital Lab (GDL) is an award winning, integrated on-line learning environment where users experience the world of biology through discovery-based learning. GDL was developed as a series of curriculum-aligned and integrated games, modules, and interactive simulations covering an array of topics in biology. To meet the needs of students, teachers, and schools, GDL is designed to be fully online, accessible through a web browser, with no downloads, or installation, accessible from home or school, and provides teachers with much needed class creation tools and integrated real-time assessment. Currently, only the plant module is online but we will be bringing new modules online every year. Additional modules will include: * Plants (environment & plants, photosynthesis, respiration, transcription, & translation) * Animals (body systems, Homeostasis, DNA replication, cell cycle, and Mitosis) * History (a time-traveling web-based scavenger hunt about the scientists and their discoveries, all leading up to the genomics revolution) * Fungi (organism life cycles, reproduction, variation, evolution, and meiosis) * Microbes * Ecology (this module ties all the other modules together allowing users to connect and interact with all the other modules at once. They will be able to discover how they are dependant on each other and how our ecosystem fundamentally works.) " |

"?The Genomics Digital Lab learning environment uses visually stunning games and puzzles to engage learners and encourage a deeper understanding of biological processes. Dynamic visualizations promote far greater understanding than static pictures in a textbook. The interconnectedness of biological systems is reflected in the way GDL is built. Throughout the GDL Learning Environment, the progressive challenges are linked in the same way as the living systems they model. The focus on problem solving promotes higher-order thinking skills in a fun and entertaining format. A built-in notebook allows learners to record their observations throughout to help keep track of their observations. This can be used to carry information between challenges as well as exported and printed as study notes for school. GDL also has integrated administrative and assessment tools for teachers. Best of all, Genomics Digital Lab is web-based, so students can access the learning environment from anywhere.? |
