| Description: | The Ocean and Resources Engineering Department (ORE) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Ocean and Resources Engineering Department is an academic unit in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences & Technology (SOEST). Application forms, instructions and information can be obtained from the WWW Site of the UHM Graduate Division. If you need more information on any ORE program and/or you would like to obtain the application forms by mail, please contact the ORE Department. Hawaii's unique location, climate and marine-oriented activities make the University of Hawaii at Manoa an ideal place for education and research in ocean and resources engineering. The graduate program in ocean engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was initiated in the Fall of 1966. It became an academic department in the College of Engineering in July 1968, with administrative responsibilities for the J.K.K. Look Laboratory of Oceanographic Engineering. In July 1977 the Department was accredited for its Master of Science program by the Engineer's Council for Professional Development (ECPD), now known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). From 1966 to August 1999, a total of 160 MS and 43 PhD students were graduated. In October 1988, the University of Hawaii at Manoa officially integrated all marine-oriented programs into the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). The Department of Ocean Engineering and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) of the College of Engineering became part of SOEST to form the technology component of this school. In July 1999 the department changed its name to Ocean and Resources Engineering (ORE) to more accurately reflect the research thrust of the faculty. |
