| Description: | This project seeks to extend the "Exploring Computer Science" (ECS) curriculum to San Jose area high schools. The ECS materials were originally developed for high school classrooms in the Los Angeles Unified School District as an instructional tool for introducing students to the "computational thinking" of computer science. Our project is a partnership between teachers from twelve high schools in the San Jose Unified, Santa Clara Unified and East Side Union High School Districts, and faculty in Computer Engineering and in Education at SCU. Begun in the summer of 2010, the primary goal of this three-year project is to increase the number of teachers trained in computing and to attract students to the study of computing - especially those from groups underrepresetned in the field of computing, such as blacks, Hispanics and women. In addition to facilitating adoption of the ECS curriculum in the schools participating in the project, this partnership is informing the creation of a set of materials to ease adoption in additional schools. These materials include additional notes for students and for teachers, recruitment materials, and promotional materials aimed at administrators, teachers, students, and parents. We are also creating an online community to support teachers offering the course. |
