| Description: | Abstract: "The teaching of Design at undergraduate level has always been accepted as being labour intensive when compared to teaching analytical engineering topics. As part of their assessment, students undertaking third semester Design courseworks were required to apply detailed dimensional tolerances and geometric tolerances to an involved design. The vehicle for this was an activity based around the design of a gearbox, incorporating the selection of standard components from catalogues. Previous experience had shown that students failed to develop sufficient knowledge of tolerancing and so, since the academic year 1997/98, new methods of teaching and assessment have been developed. These were further refined in 1998/99 and again in 1999/2000. This paper discusses the assessment of tolerancing taught in semester 3 and the improvements in the results, after remedial self-learning, between two computer based assessments. It then assesses changes in the knowledge and application ability of student cohorts involved in this experiment." <citation>T J Oliver, R M Black, V.
