| Description: | Preliminary results of the 2009 update on "She Figures" project of the European Commission. "What is the proportion of female and male researchers in Europe, and how is this balance evolving over time? In which scientific fields are women better represented? Do the career paths of female and male researchers follow similar patterns? Are men and women equally represented in sciences across Europe? How many women hold senior positions in scientific research in Europe? And is there any age trend that can be observed? The forthcoming edition of She Figures, to be published in autumn 2009, aims to provide answers to these questions and many others. She Figures 2009 reveals that women in scientific research remain a minority, accounting for 30% of researchers in the EU in 2006. Their proportion is growing faster than that of men (up by 4.4% between 2002 and 2006, compared with an increase of 2.8% for men); but not enough to indicate that the gender imbalance in science is selfcorrecting. Positive trends can be observed; for example, the share of women among scientists and engineers has grown significantly (+6.2% between 2002-2007, compared to +3.7% for men). Tertiary-educated women employed as professionals or technicians now outnumber their male counterparts by 2 percentage points." |
