| Description: | This is a demo of a case study of the IBM proprinter. Major topics include organization of the development team, concurrent engineering, multifunctional teams, design for assembly, design for automated assembly and importance of early manufacturing and automated assembly in the design process. The IBM Proprinter is a dot matrix printer developed in the early 1980's, using a new design based on Design for Automated Assembly (DFAA). The case study features novel design concepts used to reduce manufacturing costs, including injection molded snap fits, robotic-inserted pulley design, layered assembly, a helix drive driven by a stepper motor interface, mechatronics and a cantilever spring. This design case can be used in conjunction with a mechanical dissection exercise of the Proprinter, or other related printer.
