| Description: | With the support of the NSF, we have established the Hispanic Computer Brigade (HCB) initiative. Two local high schools, Silver Creek High School and Mount Pleasant High School in the East Side Union School District, are our partners in this project. The pilot project consisted of a one-week residential summer computer camp, Silicon Valley Computer Camp (SVCC), and after-school HCB Clubs for computing service-learning projects. To inspire and support learning among HCB students, HCB built a support network of peers, teachers, family members, mentors, and computer professionals. During the AY 2009-2010 academic year, students learned computer and programming skills and processes in weekly meetings with the help of advisors and mentors. The goals of this project are to provide a program that: 1) Links service learning to participants' interests in computing disciplines, 2) Exposes participants to accessible and relatable role models in computing, 3) Advances participants' likelihood to pursue careers in computing, and 4) Develops (or enhances) participants' positive attitudes towards computing. |
